Abstract
The arrival of unaccompanied minors in Catalonia has been increasing year after year. Those youngsters are under protection until 18 years old. Subsequently, they have to start their emancipation process; a fact that causes anxiety and worry. One of their main goals is the improvement of their communication and relational skills to assist their integration progress.
This workshop will explore how photography and group mentoring can be used to improve communication and relational skills that are essential for youngsters’ emancipation. This methodology is used by the organization Punt de Referència in our project called GR 16-18: Group mentoring through photography.
Main goals of the workshop
During this workshop, participants will discuss why group mentoring and photography are conceived as potential tools for the improvement of communication and relational skills of unaccompanied youngsters. To cover this, we will focus on the following topics:
- Contextualization of the migrants’ needs in Catalonia,
- The potential of photography as a tool of social intervention,
- Group mentoring as a methodology through the presentation of real cases examples.
Participants will have the chance to exchange experiences and acquire knowledge and practical strategies for social intervention with youth migrants.
Methods applied
On the one hand, the workshop will include input from the facilitators of the workshop with a brief contextualisation of the situation of the youngsters mentioned above. On the other hand, we will present the methodological approach used by Punt de Referència and some activities and tools that the participants will be able to use in their own projects. We will use an experience-based, participatory, and reflective methodology through small group discussions and interactive activities.
Target audience
This workshop is aimed at professionals interested in innovative methodologies to work with migrants through group mentoring and photography.
